Last week York University announced the enrolment suspension of 20 programs. The York administration’s decision was made without consulting the York University Faculty Association. As YUFA, CAUT and OCUFA have highlighted, these enrolment suspensions will weaken the university’s educational mission and its commitment to critical thinking, equity and social justice. TFA agrees with OCUFA that this action represents the start of a disturbing trend across Ontario’s public university system.
In response to these program suspensions at York, the TFA Executive unanimously passed the following motion:
The TFA condemns the unprecedented suspensions to programs at York University and calls for York University to rescind these enrolment suspensions. Even in the face of shrinking government funding, these suspensions have been made without proper academic consultation and directly hinder diverse and inclusive educational offerings available to students and broader mandates, such as Truth and Reconciliation calls to action.
